Development of Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) for giraffes
Partner:
African Lion Safari, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada
Paris Zoo, France
Location:
Canada, Europe
Aims:
Giraffes are one of the few species that reproduce well in captivity. However, in the wild populations are declining fast and two of the six species of giraffes are classified already as endangered. Inter species breeding (hybridization) may occur in zoos as a result of lacking breeding partners of the same species. Due to welfare, injury and disease transmission issues, translocation of giraffes from one to another zoo is not always possible. With the development of ART, such as artificial insemination or embryo transfer for giraffes, it will be possible to exchange genetics without transporting animals.
