Assisted Reproduction Methods for Marine Mammals

Location:

Europe/USA

Aims:

Marine mammals represent a special case in zoo animal reproduction and breeding management. Most species of this group are very social, intelligent and easily trainable. Thus, they often develop a strong bond to animal care staff and exhibit great trust for routine husbandry procedures. A responsibly managed breeding program for these species should therefore utilize assisted reproduction only via voluntary, trained cooperative behaviors. Benjamin Schulz is working in several facilities in Europe with strong partners from the U.S. on advancing methods and techniques.
